A Day with David Bowie
U.S. Premiere of Rare Photographs from Gugging, Austria
An intimate photographic exhibition capturing the legendary musician’s 1994 visit to the Art Brut Center Gugging. Taken by Austrian photographer Christine de Grancy, these rarely seen images reveal a quieter, more reflective side of Bowie as he explored the lives and work of the Gugging Artists—outsider creators whose raw, expressive art deeply moved him.
The experience came at a pivotal moment in his career, directly influencing the experimental direction of his 1995 album 1. Outside.
In honor of Santa Monica’s 150th anniversary, the Santa Monica Art Museum is proud to present LoCal,
a special exhibition featuring 15 artists from Santa Monica and Greater Los Angeles.
Showcasing a diverse range of mediums—from painting and photography to sculpture and mixed media—LoCal reflects the creative voices that make our region unique.
The exhibition is located in the museum’s Lobby Gallery, which is free and open to the public on the vibrant Third Street Promenade. Guests are invited to explore LoCal during museum hours, and to visit our main galleries for ticketed exhibitions running concurrently.
Join us in celebrating local creativity, community, and the cultural spirit of Santa Monica during this historic milestone year.

This fall, we’re bringing back fan-favorite creatures and artifacts from last year’s Monster: Exhibit of Horrors showcase.
The exhibition features select works from Immortal Masks, the world-renowned special effects studio led by Andrew Freeman, winner of Face Off Season 12 and other spooky artists.
From grotesque creations to cinematic-quality masks, Best of Monsters celebrates the artistry and imagination behind what haunts our nightmares. Step inside, if you dare, and experience the craftsmanship that blurs the line between reality and fantasy.
